By Laureen Missaire and Danielle S.G. Drost In November 2016, master students from ICIS (University of Maastricht) had the exciting opportunity to receive a guest lecture from an important player in the energy sector: the dynamic grid company
Alliander. Guest speakers Jos Blom and Richard Kok touched upon the opportunities Alliander, based in Arnhem, aims to invest in new markets, to support customers in their energy choices and to enhance change(s) in the energy sector. The presentation given to the master students mainly focused on green energy in the Netherlands and touched upon topics such as energy sources and energy transition, but also upon the infractructural changes necessary to make the transition to more sustainable energy grid. Nowadays, the green energy discussion has become less of a discussion about the exact types of energy sources, and has started to focus more on types of sustainable energy infrastructures, and on the practical question how to make the transition from ‘grey’ to ‘green’ energy happen within the next decades. Exiting new technology such as microbial fuel cell, block chains technology and especially energy backed currency (EBC) drew the attention of the sustainability students. (Note: the theory behind energy backed currency is that instead of paying taxes in euros, a new local currency would be used to pay for goods and services from organizations in the local community, such as energy. This brings opportunities for new ways of thinking with regards to the energy sector). An important last key message was focused on the need of variety: a combination of various techniques and more connections in the grid is crucial to ensure more stability in the growing complex system.
